Madhavapeddi Satyam Biography

Madhavapeddi Satyam was a legendary playback singer from Telugu film industry who was associated with the field since mid-1940s. One of the early playback singers of the industry, he spent more than three decades in the industry. He has also acted in a few movies and is known for his stage concerts. His voice was frequently used for the artists - S. V. Ranga Rao, Relangi and Ramana Reddy. "Vivaha Bhojanambu” of Maya Bazar and "Ayyayyo Jebulo Dabbulu Poyene” of Kulagothralu are his evergreen hits. He passed away in 2000 aged 78. He entered film scene as an actor-singer and later concentrated on his singing career.

 

Satyam was born on 11 May 1922 in Brahmanakoduru, Bapatla. Since childhood he showed interest in singing and acting in plays. His uncle Madhavapeddi Venkatramayya was a well noted dramatist who influenced a lot during his childhood days. He started off by doing small roles for stage plays and later started singing as well. When he reached Chennai as a part of his show - "Chalo Delhi" a social drama, he was spotted by Y.V. Rao, a famous filmmaker of 1940s, who gave him the first break to cinema.

 

Satyam started off as a singing actor of Tamil-English bilingual – Ramadas, where he sang three songs as well. Very soon he got his first break to Telugu cinema as a playback singer - "Manasu Gaadha Khudha Thodai” for Laila Majnu in 1949 and thus began his long association with Tollywood. Occasionally he acted in movies as well. Yesukundam Buddoda Yesukundamu of Balipeetam, Oho Andamaina Chinnadana Bangaru Vannedana of Lakshadhikari, Ayyayyo Jebulo Dabbulu Poyene of Kula Gothralu, Vivaha Bhojanambu and Bhali Bhali Bhali Deva of Maaya Baazar are among his popular songs. He played the role of Dharuka in 1957 film – Maya Baazar. Madhavapeddi Satyam Award is instituted by his son Madhavapeddi Murthy, a Kuchipudi artist.
