M. N. Roy Biography

M. N. Roy (Manabendra Nath Roy) was a politician, revolutionary leader and one of the founders of the communist party in Mexico and India. He was also a delegate to congresses of the Communist International. His real name was Narendra Nath Bhattacharya. Roy was a dedicated communist until he broke with the Communist International and was one of the leaders who was courageous to degree with great leader of communist party, none other than Lenin. Moving away from Marxism and communist party, he spent rest of his life with philosophy of radical humanism. He was an elected member of the Presidium and the Secretariat of the Communist International between 1919 and 1928.

Narendra Nath Bhattacharya belonged to Kolkata, born in a family of hereditary priests. Both his father and grandfather had served as temple priests. Till his family moved to Kodilla, he did his education at his hometown, Arbelia. Later he completed Engineering and Chemistry from Bengal Technical Institute. When waves of militant nationalism brought great changes to Kolkata and when it made great impact on educational institutions, young Narendra too got attracted to it. Narendra hated Hinduism, the religion in which he was born and developed a soft corner to Islam. He also kept his name as Mahamood in the 1930’s.

He joined the revolutionary movement at the tender age of 14 and during First World War he attempted to get weapons from other nations for his group. He reached USA with name with a forged French passport in the name of Father Martin and called himself as Manabendra Nath Roy, shortly M. N. Roy. Later he came to be known by this name. He started studying socialism during this period and later Lenin came to know about him. Thus Lenin invited Roy to Russia and thus became associated with Marxist party.
