Laxmi Agarwal Biography

Laxmi Agarwal is an acid attack victim from New Delhi, who is now a campaigner with Stop Acid Attacks. She also hosts TV shows. A speaker of the rights of acid attack victims, she is a true inspiration to many. The fatal incident occurred in 2005 when she was only 15. She was teased by a 32-year man whose advances she had rejected, and as a sort of revenge, he threw acid at her. Her face and other body parts got disfigured in the acid attack. She was a minor then. She is the director of Chhanv Foundation, a NGO which is dedicated to the survivors of acid attack. She is currently in a live-in relationship with social activist Alok Dixit, and the couple has one daughter, Pihu.

 

Laxmi Agarwal is a native of Delhi. She was born on 1 June 1990 into a middle-class family. Laxmi was acid attacked when she was 15. It was done by a 32-year-old man Gudda in 2005. Her experience was featured in Hindustan Times, along with many other acid victims. Laxmi was determined enough to take the case to the court. She took 27,000 signatures for a petition to curb acid sales, and taking that cause to the Indian Supreme Court, which resulted in the regulation of acid sales in the country. StopSaleAcid is a campaign started by Laxmi.

 

Serving as the director of Chhanv Foundation which helps acid survivors, she also hosts TV shows. Her campaigns against acid violence include hunger strikes and she demands immediate justice and rehabilitation for acid attack survivors. She and her partner Alok Dixit decided not to conduct a marriage function, as looks of a bride are very important to the society. Their families have accepted the relationship.
