Lakshmi Nagaraj Biography

Lakshmi Nagaraj is a noted playback singer associated with Kannada film industry. Lakshmi is a recipient of State award in Best Playback Singer category for the song 'Omkara' in the film Aptharakshaka. Born into a musical family of Mysore, her younger sister Indu Nagaraj too is a leading playback singer of south Indian film industry and before they gained popularity in the film scene, siblings performed together music programme Ede Thumbi Haaduvenu aired on ETV in 2005 which earned them the nickname, Chilkunda Sisters. Chilkunda is their native village. Lakshmi was the winner of Confident Star Singer contest organised by Suvarna Channel in 2009, which earned her quick recognition from public.

 

Lakshmi Nagaraj hails from Mysore, Karnataka. Lakshmi was born into a musical family from Chilkunda village. Her father C. A. Nagaraj is a vocalist and flutist and her mother H. S. Radha is also a vocalist. Her father worked as a lecturer in English Department at Maharani's PU College. Her younger sister Indu Nagaraj too is a leading playback singer of Kannada cinema, and worked in a few Telugu films as well.

 

Born into a family of strong musical background, she along with her younger sister started musical lessons under the guidance of their father at a very young age of 3. She gave her first concert in 1995 in Gundlupet when she was at the age of 7, and she shared stage with her younger sister who was 5 year-old then. After that sisters performed in more than 300 music concerts before they started playback singing. The sisters also gained recognition and attention through the show, Ede Thumbi Haaduvenu and after that they came to be known as Chilkunda Sisters.

 

Lakshmi Nagaraj is active with her live concerts and did playback singing as well. Her most noted work is the song 'Omkara' in the film Aptharakshaka which bagged her State award for Best Playback Singer. Lakshmi is a 'B' High Grade artiste for All India Radio. She is a recipient of MSIL Gaayaki Award in 2002 Nityotsava competitions telecast in Bangalore DD, apart from several musical awards. She also won first prize at All India Inter-University Music Contest held at Kolhapur.
