Kumari Kanchan Dinkerao Mail Biography

Kumari Kanchan Dinkerao Mail was a playback singer associated with Bollywood in the 1970s, best known for her chartbuster songs - Tumko mere dil ne of Rafoo Chakkar (1975), Kya khoob lagti ho of Dharmatma (1975) and Hum Tumhain Chahte Hain and Laila main laila, Qurbani (1980). She was best known as Kanchan among music fans and in the film industry. Her name is also credited as Kanchan for Hindi movies. She sang only a few songs of Bollywood. But all songs are memorable. She is best known for her stage performances aside her husband, and the troupe called Babla & Kanchan was popular throughout the Caribbean. Kalyanji Anandji gave her some memorable songs in Bollywood.

 

Kumari Kanchan Dinkerao Mail, better known as Kanchan was born on March 16, 1950. She received her first break through the movie, Rafoo Chakkar in 1975, composed by Kalyanji Anandji. It was a duet - Tumko mere dil ne aside Shailender Singh, featuring the hot pair, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh. Initially she was a voice artist and the song was meant for Lata Mangeshkar who was to dub it later. But hearing Kanchan’s version, Lata asked the composer to keep it, and Kalyanji Anandji too liked it. She also rendered her voice for a few more songs of the same movie such as "Ae Zamane Tu Kar Le Sitam Pe Sitam", "Bhajan Bina Chain Na Aaye" and "Dil De Na".

 

Thus she was a discovery of Kalyanji Anandji, who gave her a few more memorable songs later. Kya khoob lagti ho of Dharmatma and Laila main laila of Qurbani are two more popular songs of kanchan which shot her to instant fame, and both these songs were composed by Kalyanji Anandji. Her song - Laila main laila of Qurbani earned her Filmfare award for best female playback. Though she gave some memorable songs to Bollywood fans through her unique voice, she was mostly associated with stage shows aside her husband. She passed away on July 26, 2004 at the age of only 54. Till then the band was active for 4 decades, which was best known for work in the chutney music and Desi Folk music genres.
