Krishna Chattopadhyay Biography

Krishna Chattopadhyay was a prolific singer from West Bengal and one of the pioneers of Bengali kabyageeti. She was an exponent of the songs penned by Bengali maestros - Atul Prasad Sen, Dwijendralal Roy, Rajanikanta Sen and Rabindranath Tagore, and also compositions by Himangshu Dutta. She regularly performed in radio and television programmes, and has also released many albums. The renowned singer Dilipkumar Roy was her guru and mentor. She was based in Kolkata, where she lived most of her life time. She passed away in 2009.

 

Krishna Chattopadhyay was born in 1935 in Krishnanagar, West Bengal. She was born into a family of musicians and singers in Bengal, and deeply religious too. Her father Harendranath Chattopadhyay, who was a singer gave her early lessons in music. Harendranath, who was an exponent of Atul Prasad songs, taught his daughter. Later she trained under Dilipkumar Roy, son of Dwijendralal Ray, who was her mentor also. She was fully active in her musical journey till a massive heart attack robbed of her melodious voice in 2001. A gracefully melodious and disciplined voice, also known to be sensuous and expressive of deep spirituality, she conquered millions of fans.

 

Till late in life she used to follow her father’s instructions. Her sensitive renderings of kabyageeti are unmatched, and she along with her contemporary Manju Gupta is regarded as great artists of the songs belonging to this genre. She was staying with her younger son Bikramjit, in Delhi when she passed away in 2009. She breathed her last at a nursing home after being admitted there for 10 days. She was 74. Chattopadhyay is survived by two sons, Anandajit Roy and Bikramjit Roy.
