Kavuri Samba Siva Rao Biography

Kavuri Samba Siva Rao is a businessman turned politician from Andhra Pradesh. He has been a strong advocate of unified Andhra Pradesh. Associated with Indian national Congress for many decades, he resigned his cabinet power and joined BJP in May 2014 as protest to the formation of Telangana state. He served as a parliamentarian multiple times. 5-time parliamentarian belonging to Indian national Congress, he served as Minister of Textiles at Ministry of Textiles during 17 June 2013 – 26 May 2014. Rao is an engineer and industrialist who later ventured into politics.

 

He hails from Eluru, Andhra Pradesh. He was born on 1 October 1943. He is married to Hemalatha and the couple has four children. He completed his Engineering degree from NIT Warangal, and was an industrialist and businessman before he joined politics. He has successful business ventures in the fields of civil construction and health care. He set up Progressive Constructions in 1966, which is involved in large-scale infrastructure projects across the country.

 

He got elected to lower house for the first time in 1984 and while he was serving his fifth term, he was given the cabinet power. Kavuri was elected to Lok Sabha thrice (1984, 1989 and 1998) from Machilipatnam constituency and twice (2004 and 2009) from Eluru. He is popularly known as Kavuri among his supporters. The leader was finally awarded the leadership of the party after being ignored on several occasions in the past. He even sent his resignation letter to Lok Sabha speaker following the reshuffle when his name was not included into ministry. He was later induced to cabinet in 2013.

 

As a political leader, he has been leading Congress MPs from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions to oppose the formation of Telangana state. But after the announcement of separate state, he resigned his power and joined BJP as a sort of protest.
