Kariya Munda Biography

Kariya Munda is an Indian politician belonging to BJP who served as the Deputy Speaker of the 15th Lok Sabha, the government headed by Manmohan Singh. He is an 8-time member of parliament. As a former cabinet minister of Indian government, he was associated with Janata Party in the 1970s and later became a prominent leader of Bharatiya Janata Party. Under Morarji Desai government in 1977, he served as the Minister of State of Steel industry. He was also a cabinet minister in 1999 government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, though it was short-lived. Munda is one of the popular leaders from Jharkhand and former Bihar.

 

Munda was born in Khunti District of present day Jharkhand state. He was born in 1936 in Anigara village. He completed post-graduation in Anthropology from Ranchi University. He was active in politics in the 1970s and was inducted to Morarji Desai’s cabinet in 1977 and given the portfolio steel. It was for the first time he got elected to Indian parliament and he was sent from Khunti constituency. He got re-elected to Lok Sabha in 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2009 from the same constituency and was actively involved with state politics, then a part of Bihar state. He has been elected to state assembly several times as an MLA. He also served as an MLA of newly formed Jharkhand state.

 

He was unanimously elected as the deputy speaker of 15th Lok Sabha, where Meira Kumar from Indian National Congress got selected to speaker’s position.  A dozen nominations were filed in Mr. Munda’s favour and motion was first moved by Leader of the Opposition L.K. Advani and seconded by Rajnath Singh.
