Kamla Pant Biography

Kamla Pant is a feminist, politician and women's rights activist, best known for her work in the Uttarakhand movement, which demanded a separate state from Uttar Pradesh. Her dream finally fulfilled in 2000, when a new state was formed named Uttarakhand. She is the co-founder of a magazine named Uttara for women, along with Uma Bhatt, Basanti Pathak, and Sheela Rajwar. It’s a women-centric magazine founded in 1990, and completed 25 years of publication in 2015. It also publishes many works, apart from publishing stories revolving around women’s issues in the hills of Uttarakhand. Since the magazine was started, the founders have decided that there were to be no recipes, no beauty treatment pieces, no sewing or embroidery talks in printed version/format.

 

Kamla Pant was born on 18 December 1956 into a poor family. Since young she got involved with various student movements. She got into contact with the activists involved in the Chipko movement, which paved her way to activism. She completed her PG as well as LLB studies, before she started practising as a lawyer in Kumaon in the 1980s. But later she switched over activism and women rights movement.

 

She was a leader of Uttarakhand Shangarsh Vahini and she led the famous Nasha Nahi Rojgar Do movement in Kumaon. To completely ban liquor in rural area of Kumaon, she closely worked with Uma Bhatt and participated in campaigns as well. She also fasted for 11 days as a part of this movement. She worked for women rights, female trafficking, and by mid-1990s, she actively organized a campaign against state government in demand of statehood for Uttarakhand. She participated in Uttarakhand Mahila Manch also, organizing women for this move.
