Kamla Beniwal Biography

Kamla Beniwal is an Indian politician, who was formerly associated with Indian national congress. She is the first female state minister of Rajasthan. She served as governor of three different Indian states between 2009 and 2014. She was appointed as Governor of Tripura on 15 October 2009 – a post she held till 26 November 2009. Then she was shifted to Gujarat where she remained in power till 6 July 2014.

Soon after Narendra Modi came into power at centre, many of state governors got shuffled and she was sent to Mizoram. However she was sacked by the PM, just two months prior to the termination of her term as governor. The leaders are believed to share some cold vibes for various reasons. However her alleged involvement in a land scam in Rajasthan was cited to be the reason behind sudden termination.

Kamla Beniwal was born on 12 January 1927 in Gorir village of Buhana, Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan. She got elected to state assembly at the age of 27 and became the first female minister in Rajasthan in 1954. Since then she served as a minister of Congress party for a long time, handling different portfolios such as home, revenue, education and agriculture. Though she remained a powerful and influential congress leader from Rajasthan, she has been involved with many scams as well. Jaipur land scam and appointment of Gujarat Lokayukta are among those allegations.

As the governor of Gujarat, Beniwal had challenged the state government on issues such as the appointment of a Lokayukta. Her appointment of Justice RA Mehta as Lokayukta in 2011 was challenged by Narendra Modi, who was serving as state’s CM. She was also accused by the state government of delaying legislations passed by the Gujarat Assembly, during her tenure as governor of the state.
