Kalyani Nair Biography

Kalyani Nair is a south Indian playback singer from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala who sings for Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu movies. She is currently settled in Chennai. Kalyani first appeared on Television in an episode of the musical show - Symphony on Kairali TV. As a school girl she created waves through that single show and since then offers came pouring in. Associated with popular composers like Vidya Sagar, Santhosh Narayanan, Mickey J Meyer etc, she recently sang for 2016 Bollywood film Saala Khadoos. She sang the solo number - "Dhuaan Hai Dhuaan Zindagi" for the film.

 

She belongs to Thiruvananthapuram. Kalyani did her schooling mostly in North India as her father Colonel U.G. Kumar was posted in different places in India. Thus she studied Hindustani music since young and got chance to learn Carnatic music only after she settled in Chennai. She gave her first ghazal concert at the age of 12. She studied Economics in Ethiraj College, Chennai and during this time, she took formal lessons in Carnatic music from Binny Krishnakumar. A great fan of Lata, Asha and Geeta Dutt, she has performed for Salil Choudary and Raj Kapoor nites held in Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram respectively.

 

She entered playback singing in the year 2003. Her first break to movies was given by Vidya Sagar through Parthiban Kanavu. She sang the popular track - Bak Bak Bak hey Madapura for the movie and its Telugu version. She also sang the popular title track - "Dingiripattalam" of Malayalam film ‘Pattalam’ by the same composer the same year. Later Kalyani sang for Vidyasagar in Malayalam `Satyam' and `Kochi Rajavu,' apart from the popular Tamil song - `Moollai Thirugum' in `Kana Kande’.
