K. P. Mohanan Biography

K. P. Mohanan is a prominent politician from Kerala belonging to Socialist Janata (Democratic) Party (SJD) – a regional party based in Kerala and currently forms a part of ruling UDF. He also serves as the General Secretary of SJD and also its Parliamentary Board Chairman. He is a cabinet minister of Chandy and currently serves as Kerala State Minister for Agriculture. He had been following in the footsteps of his father and has taken over the political mantle after the death of his father, senior leader - P. R. Kurup. In the 2011 assembly elections he won from Kuthuparamba constituency, winning by a majority of 3303 votes over LDF candidate S. A Puthiyavalappil. He has been formerly elected in 2001 and 2006 state assembly elections representing Peringalam constituency.

He was born in Putoor of Kannur district in 1950 to senior SJD leader P. R. Kurup and K.P. Leelavathy Amma. After matriculation, he took a diploma in Aeronautical Engineering from Nehru College, Coimbatore. He worked as Editor-in-chief for 'Padayani Daily' for a brief time and then moved to Qatar where he worked in film and photography field. He is also trained in Kerala martial art – Kalaripayattu. He trained in this art form since the age of 5 for seven years. In fact he belonged to the family which carried forward this tradition and C.V. Narayanan Gurukkal is one of such leading names.

He started his political career as a member of ISO and became active in politics following his father’s death. He has been elected to KLA thrice. Currently as a state minister he handles the portfolios including Agricultural University, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary University and Soil conservation.
