K. B. Sahay Biography

Krishna Ballabh Sahay was a prominent politician from Bihar in the post-independent era. He was a prominent freedom fighter too. He served as the 3rd Chief Minister of Bihar during 2 October 1963 – 5 March 1967, preceded by Pandit Binodanand Jha. He belonged to Indian National Congress. After this term, a prominent Congress leader Mahamaya Prasad Sinha resigned from the party and formed a coalition government of Samyukta Vidhayak Dal (SVD), the first non-Congress government, which collapsed after 330 days. Krishna Ballabh Sahay also served as the Revenue minister of Bihar soon after independence. He lived during the period, 31 December 1898 – 3 June 1974.

Krishna Ballabh Sahay, shortly called K. B. Sahay was born on 31 December 1898 in Sheikhpura, Bengal Presidency, British India. The place now belongs to Patna of Bihar. His father Munshi Ganga Prasad served as a Daroga under British Rule. Sahay completed his graduation in English from Hazaribag in 1919. He is known for his excellence in English, and has received Gait's Gold Medal from the then Governor of Bihar & Orissa Mr. Gait. His active participation in Independence Movement happened the following year, when he joined Civil Disobedience Movement and gave up his studies. He was jailed many times for this reason by British.

During one of his terms in jail, he met his mentor Sri Babu, and some of the prominent politicians and social leaders like Anugrah Narayan Sinha. When "Quit India Movement" was launched across India in 1942, K B Sahay led the movement at Hazaribagh and was jailed. While at jail he was instrumental in the escape of Jayaprakash Narayan along with his associates from jail. For that he was given a punishment and send to Bhagalpur jail.
