Jolly Mukherjee Biography

Jolly Mukherjee is a popular singer and lyricist associated with Bollywood. Though he has sung lesser number of songs, he has been well-recognized. Noted film actress Ava Mukherjee known for playing grandmother roles in Bollywood is his mother-in-law. Film director Romilla Mukherjee is his brother-in-law who directed the film, Detective Nani, in which Ava Mukherjee played the lead role. Jolly Mukherjee is also known as King of Strings. He started his film journey as a chorus singer of R. D. Burman in 1978, and got opportunity as a playback singer in the early 1990s. Chahe Meri Jaan Tu Le Le – was his first big break as a playback singer.

 

Jolly has learnt Western and Hindustani Classical forms of music. He started his career in jingles, where he worked as a back vocal singer. Then he became a music writer for airline on-flight introductions such as the British Airways. But his real passion was to arrange and compose songs. He worked with Madras Cinematic Orchestra, which earned him recognition. In 1978 he joined Bollywood as a chorus singer of R. D. Burman.

 

He got his first break as a singer in the late 1980s when he was given the big break by Laxmikanth-Pyarelal. The movie was Dayawaan. The songs - Diwani Tum Jawanon Ki and Chahe Meri Jaan Tu Le Le became extremely popular. Later he sang songs for Indrajeet (1991) and Tum Karo Vaada (1993). He has rendered his voice for some of the popular films of Bollywood such as Narshima, Chaalbaaz, Raja Babu, Chandini, Saahiba, Judge Mujrim, Agnisakshi, Aadmi, Insaaf Apne Lahu Se, Aatish etc. His voice suited Rishi Kapoor for late hits such as title tracks of Chandini and Saahibaan. He also worked as a music arranger of renowned singer Hariharan’s albums - Jashn, Paigham and Gulfam.
