Homen Borgohain Biography

Homen Borgohain is a noted writer, poet, critic, columnist and editor in the Assamese language. In 1978, he received Sahitya Akademi Award in Assamese language for his novel, Pita Putra. Atmanusandhan, Matsyagandha and Dhumuha aru Ramdhenu are his other noted works. His novels are mostly based on his research efforts. Nilamoni Phukan Award from Asom Sahitya Sabha and Assam Valley Literary Award are other major awards received by him. His works include non-fiction, biography as well as novels. Recently, he established an organization Karunadhara to support the physically and mentally handicapped people. Currently, he serves as the editor of Amar Asom, the most prestigious Assamese daily newspaper.

He was born in a small village of Lakhimpur. For higher studies, he reached Guwahati where he studied at Cotton College, the most prestigious college of India's North East. He got married to famous writer, Nirupama Tamuli, an Academy award winner. The couple has two sons and 3 grandchildren. Their son Pradipta Borgohain is also a writer and a noted teacher. The writer couple, Homen and Nirupama together wrote a novel called Puwar Purobi Sandhyar Bibhash. The controversial novel Popiya Torar Sadhu, written by Rita Chowdhury was loosely based on the real life of this writing couple.

Homen’s works like Subala, Pita Putra, Timirtirtha and Kushilab have been controversial and provoking. His works, Astarag and Edinar Diary give a clear picture on the existence of man with all its complexities. Matsyagandha—the story of Menaka is one of his most famous works. He is also known for identifying and promoting a long list of Assamese writers. Dhanada Devi, Aruni Kashyap, Nirmal Sahewalla, Anuradha Sharma Pujari, Manikuntala Bhattacharya and Anamika Bora are among those leading names.
