Rita Chowdhury Biography

Rita Chowdhury is a Sahitya Akademi Award winning writer from Assamese language. She won Sahitya Academy award for controversial novel Popiya Torar Sadhu, which was inspired from the real life story of influential writing couple of Assamese literature, Homen Borgohain and Nirupama Borgohain. Deo Langkhui is another noted work. She is the wife of famous politician of Asom Gana Parishad, Chandra Mohan Patowary who has earlier served as cabinet minister of Assam. Now she is a senior lecturer in Cotton College, Guwahati, Assam in Political Science Department.

 

Rita Chowdhury was born in Tirap District of Arunachal Pradesh on August 20, 1960 as the daughter of Biraja Nanda Chowdhury. Her schooling was done at Upper Haflong L.P. School and Margherita Public Higher Secondary School. Then she took post-graduation in Political Science and Assamese and took LLB degree and a Ph. D also. Her first novel was Abirata Jatra published in the year 1981. This book received first prize of Asom Sahitya Sabha’s literary competition on the contemporary Assamese situation. She was a member of Jatiyatabadi Juba Chatra Parishad during the Assam agitation and she published this debut during the time when she was a part of agitation. She was imprisoned twice in Guwahati and thrice in Dibrugarh Jail as a part of this agitation.

 

Apart from Abirata Jatra, her other works are Thirthabhumi (1988), Maha Jibanar Adharshila (1993), Nayana Tarali Sujata (1996), Popiya Torar Xadhu (1998), Ragmalkosh (1999), Jala Padma (1999), Hridoy Nirupai (2003), Deo Langkhui (2005) and Makam (2010). Xudoor Nakshatra, Banariya Batahar Xuhuri, Alop Pooharar Alop Andharar and Boga Matir Tulaxi are her major poetry collections. Kolaguru Bishnuprasad Rabha Award in 2006 and Asom Shitya Sabha Award are other honours received by her.
