Himanshu Roy Biography

Himanshu Roy was an Indian police officer, who served as the Additional Director General of Police of Maharashtra. Also he was ATS Maharashtra Chief. Mumbai’s top cop is known for solving several high profile cases of the metro city in the recent times. The arrest of Vindu Dara Singh who had alleged links to bookies in spot fixing at 2013 Indian Premier League spot-fixing and betting case, the firing on Dawood's brother Iqbal Kaskar's driver Arif Bael, Murder cases of law graduate Pallavi Purkhayasta, journalist J Dey, Laila Khan and the double murder case involving Vijay Palande exclusively belong to this efficient officer. It came to a great shock to Mumbaities when he shot himself by mouth on May 11, 2018, thus committing suicide.

 

Himanshu Roy was born on June 23, 1963 in Mumbai. Roy's father was a well-known Colaba doctor. He completed his graduation from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, and later joined as IPS officer of Maharashtra Cadre of 1988 batch. Later he had a sterling career, and gained popularity for solving many high profile cases. He climbed up ladder in good momentum, and earned fame and popularity. He served as joint commissioner of crime during 2010-2014, and he looked after the infamous IPL betting case during this tenure. Murder of Laila Khan and her relatives was yet another case he investigated during this period.

 

For almost 10 years, he held some high positions in his profession. In the recent reshuffle of Mumbai police, he got sidelined as Additional General Director of Police (housing). He is also credited to setting Mumbai’s first cyber-crime cell. When he shot dead, 7 years’ service was left. The reason is unknown. Himanshu Roy was undergoing treatment for cancer.
