Hasan Kamal Biography

Hasan Kamal is a popular lyricist associated with Bollywood, best known for the evergreen songs of Nikah. He is a prominent poet of modern Urdu literature too. The title track of Aaj Ki Awaaz (1984) earned him Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist. "Bahut Der Se" from Tawaif earned him a Filmfare nomination the following year. In fact he received Filmfare nomination for best lyricist for the first time in 1981 for two songs - "Dil Ke Armaan" and "Dil Ki Yeh Arzoo Thi" for the movie – Nikah, the movie which gave him instant fame and popularity. He also received Sur Singar Dr. V.D. Arora Awards for Nikaah in 1983, Awam in 1987 and Tere Payal Meri Geet in 1992.

 

Hasan Kamal was born and brought up in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. He graduated from the Lucknow University. After graduation he started his professional career as a journalist. He joined Blitz Weekly in 1965 where he worked as a sub-editor. He became the editor of Urdu Blitz in 1974. During his association with Urdu Blitz, he played a significant role in increasing the circulation of the magazine. He also contributed columns to Al-Bagh, Inquilab, Rozanama Rashtriya Sahara, Etmaad and many other magazines and many of his columns have been translated to other languages.

 

Apart from being a successful writer and journalist, he also earned fame as an Urdu poet and Bollywood lyricist. 1982 film "Nikaah” marked his film debut, and movie and songs were well appreciated. The songs made Salma and Hasan overnight stars. He became a popular lyricist of Bollywood soon after. Throughout his career he earned 4 nominations of Filmfare Best Lyricist award and managed to bag one for Aaj Ki Awaaz (1984). Anwar (2007) and Khela (2008) are among his recent works.
