Harsh Vardhan (Delhi Politician) Biography

Dr. Harsh Vardhan is a politician and parliamentarian representing Bharatiya Janata Party who currently is a member of Modi’s cabinet. Vardhan is the incumbent Minister of Health and Family Welfare at present. He was BJP’s chief minister candidate in the 2013 Delhi assembly election. As a prominent member of state politics he represents Krishna Nagar in the state assembly since 1993. Dr. Vardhan has been re-elected from the same constituency in the 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013 elections.

Harsh Vardhan was born in Delhi in 1954. He schooled at Anglo Sanskrit Victoria Jubilee Senior Secondary School, Daryaganj. He completed both Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College, Kanpur and also took Master of Surgery in Otorhinolaryngology. He was associated with RSS, a wing of BJP since his school days.

 
He became active in the state politics since early 1990s and contested in Delhi Assembly representing Krishna Nagar in 1993 and he won the state elections. He served as the state Minister of Education in 1994 and has been repeatedly elected to state assembly consecutively for the next four terms since 1998. He was BJP’s chief minister candidate in the 2013 Delhi assembly election. During his tenure as state health minister he implemented the project of the Pulse Polio Programme, which became huge hit across the state. In 1997, he passed Delhi Prohibition of Smoking and Non-Smokers Health Protection Act, thus becoming the first Indian state to pass anti-tobacco laws.

 
In 2014 General elections, he defeated prominent Congress politician and former cabinet minister, Kapil Sibal from Chandni Chowk seat in Delhi. He was appointed as the Minister of Health and Family Welfare on 26 May 2014.
