Har Dayal Biography

Har Dayal was an Indian nationalist revolutionary, scholar and polymath, better known as the founder of the Ghadar Party in US. Though brilliant in studies and had a good future in the Indian Civil Service, he turned down them all in the service of the nation and for its freedom struggle movement. He served as the General Secretary of the Gadar party and travelled across the globe to spread the freedom movement. He was also associated with many revolutionaries in UK and US and C. F. Andrews, S.K.Verma and Bhai Permanand are a few names to mention. He died in Philadelphia on March 4, 1939 and was active with his social life till his death, aged 54.

 

He was born in Delhi in 1884. Since young he was influenced by Arya Samaj and its great leaders. He was also inspired by great world leaders like Giuseppe Mazzini and Karl Marx and their movements. He completed Master’s in Sanskrit from Punjab University and earned scholarship for further studies. But after he reached Orford, he got associated with freedom struggle movement and returned to India resigning his scholarship. Later he started writing articles in Indian newspapers criticizing British government and British Government decided to impose a ban upon his writing. At that moment Lala Lajpat Rai advised him to go abroad and he agreed.

 

In 1909 he reached Paris and took the editorship of Vande Mataram. Later he moved to different places. He reached USA and became one of the founding members of the revolutionary group - Gadar movement. Fearing arrest he migrated to Sweden and England and finally returned to USA where he took his last breath.
