Girindra Mukerji Biography

Girindra Mukerji was an Indian revolutionary, organizer, and agriculturist. He is known for his stand against British. He is the author of the famous article, "The Hindu in America”, written during British rule in India. He studied at UC Berkeley in the early 1900s and was quite active as an organizer and spiritual leader then. Mukerji represented the Vedanta Society during his stay at UC Berkeley. He once led a protest against J. Lovell Murray, a Christian evangelist in 1908 for his speech on the subject, "Awakening the Orient".

 

Girindra Mukerji was born in Kolkata, West Bengal. He was the son of a Judge who served in high court. He received an AB degree from Calcutta University in 1901 and moved to the United States where he studied at University of California, Berkeley. He represented the Vedanta Society at the Lewis and Clark Exposition in Portland in summer 1905. In November 1907, he published a booklet on American colleges focused on an Indian audience. The article titled "The Hindu in America," published in the Overland Monthly was well received. His lecture on the British empire in India to UC Berkeley's Economics Club in 1907 was covered by San Francisco Chronicle, and published with the title, "Hindu Arraigns Britons for the Ruin of India: Calcutta Graduate Scores England for Overtaxing of His People."

 

Once he led a wide student protest against a talk titled "Awakening the Orient" organized by the local Y.M.C.A. J. Lovell Murray, the Christian evangelist was asked to remove from his talk any references to the immorality of Hindu priests, which Murray refused. Mukerji responded it through his speech, followed by six other students and the event was stopped in the middle. After graduating from UC Berkeley in 1908, Mukerji worked as the Superintending Chemist in a sugar factory in Porto Rico, Cuba. Once he returned to India he worked in Bengal National College.
