Girija Vyas Biography

Dr. Girija Vyas is an Indian politician belonging to Indian National Congress. She is also known as a poet and writer. She served as the Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation in 2013 under Manmohan Singh’s cabinet. She was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from the Chittorgarh constituency. However she faced a major setback from her major constituency. She is a former president of National Commission for Women of India. She has earlier served as the M.L.A. from Udaipur, Rajasthan and served as a Minister in the Provincial Government of Rajasthan till 1990. She currently serves as the Chairperson of Media Department, All India Congress Committee.

 

Girija Vyas was born on 8 July 1946. She completed Doctorate in Philosophy and later started her career as a faculty in Mohanlal Sukhadia University of Udaipur and the University of Delaware. She was elected for the first time to Rajasthan state assembly elections in the year 1985. She was also given the portfolio of Minister in the Provincial Government of Rajasthan till 1990. In 1991, she contested for Lok sabha elections from Udaipur and got elected as well. She also served as the cabinet minister of Information and Broadcasting under the ministry of Narasimha Rao.

 

She became the President, All India Mahila Congress in 1993 and after that she served in several decorative positions and also held many committee member positions. Very soon she rose to prominence in Indian politics. She was re-elected to lok sabha for the third term in 1999. She became an MLA of Rajasthan in 2008. As a writer she has published poems in English, Urdu and Hindi.
