G. M. C. Balayogi Biography

G. M. C. Balayogi was a senior politician from Andhra Pradesh belonging to Telugu Desam Party. His full name is Ganti Mohana Chandra Balayogi. This politician had a distinction for being selected as Speaker of Lok Sabha twice. He became the speaker for the first time in 12th Lok Sabha and was unanimously re-elected to the next Lok Sabha as well. However he died in crash of a Bell 206 helicopter in Kaikalur, Krishna District in 2002. He died at a comparatively young age in politics. He was only 50 when death took away and he was serving as Lok Sabha speaker then. G.M.C. Balayogi Athletic Stadium was named in his memory.

 

He was born on 1 October 1951 in Yedurulanka of Madras Presidency, British India. Born and brought up in a rural village, he had to travel long distance for school education. Later he took Master’s degree and also completed his LLB studies. Balayogi began practicing law in 1980 in Kakinada as an apprentice of Gopalaswamy Shetty. In 1985 he became a First Class Magistrate. But later he resigned his position to resume legal practice. He got actively involved with politics in the early 1990s.

 

He got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1991, followed by 1998 and 1999 Lok Sabha elections. He lost 1996 Assembly elections. He became the 12th Speaker of Lok Sabha on 24 March 1998 during his second term as parliamentarian. He was re-elected as Speaker of Lok Sabha in the next assembly as well. Balayogi headed many Indian Parliamentary Delegations to foreign countries, and is known for his efficiencies in the Speaker’s position. But he met with a fatal accident. He died in crash of a Bell 206 helicopter in Kaikalur in 2002.
