He was known for his flamboyant stage persona and four-octave vocal range, which is indeed a unique phenomenon quite rare among the artists. Most singers can sing up to three octave vocal range. He died at a comparatively young age of 45 in 1991 due to complications from AIDS, just a day after he confirmed the disease condition.

Freddie Mercury was born as Farrokh Bulsara on 5 September 1946 at Stone Town, Sultanate of Zanzibar. He was born to Indian Gujarati parents and was of Parsi origin. His parents were Bomi and Jer, who moved to Zanzibar from India during British rule as a part of Bomi’s job at British Colonial Office. Mercury had a younger sister called Kashmira. He was born with four supernumerary incisors, which attributed a lot to his singing career and voice range later.

Mercury spent most of his childhood in Mumbai, India where he did schooling and also took music lessons. He started taking piano lessons at the age of seven. He schooled from St. Peter's School, Panchagni. At the age of 12, he formed a school band, the Hectics and performed cover versions of rock music. He also attended St. Mary's School, Mumbai, and returned to Zanzibar in 1963. The family relocated to Feltham, Middlesex, England the following year.

Following graduation, Mercury joined a series of bands. In 1970 he teamed up with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, to become lead singer of their band Smile. The following year bassist John Deacon joined their band. Mercury chose the name "Queen" for the new band, which went on to create some iconic songs of the next two decades. Mercury also penned lines for some of the popular songs of the band such as "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Killer Queen", "Somebody to Love", "Don't Stop Me Now", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", and "We Are the Champions".
