E. M. Sudarsana Natchiappan Biography

Dr. E. M. Sudarsana Natchiappan is a senior political leader from Tamil Nadu. He is a member of Indian national Congress and has just completed his tenure as a parliamentarian representing Tamil Nadu. He served as the Rajya Sabha member for last two terms since June 2004 and his second term has just ended on 29 June 2016. He was a cabinet minister of Manmohan Singh’s second cabinet where he served as Minister of State for Commerce and Industry during 17 June 2013 – 26 May 2014. He has been elected to Lok Sabha from Sivaganga constituency in 1994 and served a term of 5 years. He currently serves as the Chairman of Parliamentary Forum on Human Rights, New Delhi since 2004. He was a member of Business Advisory Committee in 2013-2014.

 

E. M. Sudarsana Natchiappan was born on 29 September 1947 in Eriyur, Sivaganga district, Tamil Nadu. N.V. Madhavan & Thangam are his parents. He is an advocate by profession. He has been associated with Indian National Congress for several years and held many senior positions. He served as the State Secretary of Indian National Rural Labour Federation, Tamil Nadu, 1976-95. He was President of Tamil Nadu Human Rights Department in 1999. He is a Senior Advocate in Supreme Court of India.

 

Natchiappan is co-founder and President of the Parliamentarian Forum on Human Rights, which acted as a global platform to discuss and act on Human Rights Violation, especially for India. He entered active politics in the 1990s. Since 2000 he has served as a Committee member for various sectors such as Science and Technology, Environment and Forests, Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice, Finance, Prevention of Torture Bill, Commerce, Labour, Committee on Rules etc.

 

He was elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1994 from his hometown. During his tenure as cabinet minister, Central government announced to sell the 5 % stake in the Neyveli Lignite Corporation to Tamil Nadu as desired by Chief Minister Jayalalitha. It was also given an option for its workers to buy Company shares in exchange of their salaries.
