E. Ahamed Biography

E. Ahamed is a well-known politician from Kerala, belonging to Indian Union Muslim League. Currently he serves as the National President of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Minister of state for External Affairs in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet. He was elected to 15th Lok Sabha from Malappuram constituency. Earlier he was assigned the portfolio of railways. He holds LLB from Thiruvananthapuram Law College. Ahamed was the Founding Chairman of the Kerala State Rural Development Board and he served as the chairman during the period 1971-1977.

 

He was born in Kannur in 1938. After graduation from Govt. Brennen College in Tellicherry, he took LLB from Kerala University. He has been regularly elected to Kerala State Legislative Assembly since 1967. Later he got elected for the terms 1977, 1980, 1982 and 1987. He has served as the Cabinet Minister for Industries for Kerala government. Chairman of the Kerala State Rural Development Board (1971-77), Executive Chairman of the Kerala State Small Scale Industries Development Corporation (1979-1980) and Chairman of the Municipal Council in Kannur (1981-83) are the major posts held by him during his tenure in Kerala politics.   

 

He got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1991, following Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination. Later he won 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009 elections as well. He has never been defeated in the Lok sabha elections since he got elected for the first time. He served as the Minister of State for External Affairs in Manmohan Singh’s ministry during the term of 5 years, 2004 to 2009. When he got elected in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, he was given the portfolio of Railways. Yet in 2011, he assumed his charge as Minister of State of External Affairs.
