Dinesh Gupta Biography

Dinesh Gupta was a revolutionary leader and freedom fighter from Bengal who lost his life at a very young age of just 19 in the struggles for Indian freedom. He along with Badal Gupta and Benoy Basu were the key members of attack on the Secretariat Building - the Writers' Building in the Dalhousie square in Kolkata in 1930. Though the group managed to kill Col NS Simpson, the Inspector General of Prisons, infamous for ill-treating Bengal prisoners, he couldn’t save his life. When his group couldn’t resist British attack, he shot himself.

He was born in 1911 in Josholong in Munshiganj District of present day Bangladesh. Dinesh joined Bengal Volunteers while studying at Dhaka College. The group later turned to be a powerful revolutionary organization whose main aim was to target and kill British officials and policemen who ill-treat Indians. He also trained local revolutionaries of Midnapore for a short period. Those trained people include revolutionaries who murdered three District Magistrates in succession - Douglas, Burge, and Peddy.

Later the association targeted Col NS Simpson, the Inspector General of Prisons. He was infamous for ill-treating prisoners. Three members were chosen. They included - Badal Gupta, Benoy Basu and Dinesg himself. They also planned an attack on the Secretariat Building - the Writers' Building in the Dalhousie square in Kolkata. The three disguised themselves as foreigners entered the Writers' Building. Though they could kill Simpson, they got badly injured in the British attack. They managed to injure a few British officials as well. But the group of 3 was not sufficient enough to fight British men. To avoid being caught, Badal Gupta took Potassium cyanide, while the rest two shot themselves with their revolvers.

The Dalhousie Square was later renamed B.B.D. Bagh after Indian independence, in memory of these three young revolutionaries.
