Chinmaya Dunster Biography

Chinmaya Dunster is a well-known sarod player and musician from England. He is also an environmentalist. He is best known for his music concerts promoting conservation of nature, wildlife and environment. He is also a composer known for fusion music, and he incorporates elements of Celtic with Hindustani music for his compositions. As of now he has released 20 musical albums since early 1990s. In the early 1980s, he became a disciple of Osho. Dunster currently resides in Auckland, New Zealand with his partner and a child.

 

His birth name is Stephen Dunster, and he was born in Kent, England in 1954. After completing his art studies, he decided to study deep about music of different genres. In the late 1970s Dunster left Europe and travelled through Afghanistan to reach north India. He got drawn towards Indian classical music and instrumentation and stayed here. He happened to attend a sarod concert by Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, and later dedicated 13 years towards the field of Indian music and Sarod. He stayed in India and London, concentrating towards learning Sarod. He extensively travelled many countries including Canada, England, Japan, Sri Lanka, Thailand etc.

 

In 1982 he became a disciple of Osho. The following year he became a disciple of Ustad Gurdev Singh at London. In 1989 he moved to Pune where he continued with his studies for next 6 years. Dunster founded the east-west fusion band with Prem Joshua, Terra Incognita in 1991 and released two albums. Since then he has released around 20 albums. Dunster then founded the Celtic Ragas Band in 2001 and the Green Ragas Band in 2010, which performed at 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
