Chhavi Rajawat Biography

Chhavi Rajawat is the sarpanch of a poor village Soda, near Jaipur of Rajasthan. Rajawat divides her time between her village, Soda, and Jaipur and currently resides with her parents. Chhavi is not affiliated to any political party, though she is an elected candidate. She is not at all actively involved with politics. She has spoken about her village at UN Meeting. She is one of the youngest sarpanches at present and she believed to make a difference by investing her considerable energies in social causes and for the people of her ancestral village Soda. She also feels that women of the village openly interact with her and discuss their problems as their sarpanch is a lady.

 

Rajawat was born in Soda, Jaipur in a Rajput family in 1977. She has a strong emotional bond to her village where she spent her childhood. She completed her schooling at Rishi Valley School, Andhra Pradesh and Mayo College Girls School of Ajmer and completed graduation from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University. She also completed MBA from BIMM Pune. She also had a professional career for a short period before switching herself for a social cause. Perhaps she is the first woman sarpanch of India with an MBA degree.

 

She serves as a facilitator between her village, the government and NGOs and has been instrumental role in bringing significant changes to her village. She helped women to be economically powerful as well. She provided alternate job opportunities and gave provisions for activities like tailoring, candle making and grinding spices and pulses. Chhavi has focused on education and has also worked on infrastructural development - constructing roads and drains. The Times of India credits her as the changing face of rural Rajasthan.
