Chaya Ganguly Biography

Chaya Ganguly is an Indian singer and a winner of the most prestigious National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer. She won the award for the very popular Bollywood song, "Aap Ki Yaad Aati Rahi Raat Bhar” for 1978 movie, Gaman. She has sung only a few songs for Bollywood, and is still known for this very popular song from Gaman. The dilemma of Ghulam Hussain, a migrant taxi driver played by actor Farooq Sheikh was well showcased through this song in female voice. She has also sung many popular ghazals. In fact she gained more popularity as a ghazal singer than a playback singer. She is “A” Grade Light Music Artist of AIR and a regular performer over All India Radio and Doordarshan.

 

She was born in West Bengal in the year 1952. She completed her Master’s degree in Botany. She chose to be a Programmer in Broadcasting and has been associated with All India Radio and Doordarshan for more than 36 years, till she retired on 31st July, 2012. She retired as Head of Transcription & Programme Exchange Service of All India Radio. During her association with government service as a broadcaster, she gained recognition as a good programmer and administrator, and an excellent organizer.

 

She has also sung Bhaskar Chandavarkar’s composition “Chaandni Raat Bhar” and a few more songs in the 1994 film “Thoda Sa Roomani Ho Jaaye”. She sang the song, Piya Piya Se Kya Jaadu for the music album Trikon Ka Chautha Kon, composed by Jaidev. She has collaborated with other playback singers such as Anita Kanwar, Arun Joglekar, Deepa Lagoo, Banwari Taneja and Usha Reg at different occasions, and has released albums too. She also lent her voice for TV Serials including ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’.
