Ch Chhunga Biography

Ch Chhunga was an Indian politician from north-east state of Mizoram, who served as the first chief minister of the state. He served as a member of the Mizo Union and Chief Minister from 3rd May 1972 to 10th May 1977, completing his term of 5 years. He won Kolasib constituency to be elected as the chief minister. He was the Chief Executive Member of Mizoram District Council, The United Mizo Parliamentary Party. It was a coalition of Mizo Union and Congress Party which gained success in the early 1970s.

 

Ch Chhunga was born in Mizoram, a state in northeast India. He got into active politics after Indian independence. He served as a member of the Mizo Union and was appointed as President of the Mizo Union in the 1952 General Assembly. He was a young leader then, and people preferred to choose a young leader over aged and much senior Bawichhuaka. In the total life span of  28 years of Mizo Union Party, Ch Chhunga held the position of party president for long 14 years.

 

He won election in Kolasib constituency and got elected as the chief minister of Mizoram. He sworn in as the new CM of the newly formed Mizoram state on 3rd May 1972 and remained in this position for next 5 years. The seat became vacant in 1977 following President’s rule. T. Sailo from Mizo People's Conference came into power in 1978. Ch Chhunga passed away in 1988 aged 72. A Biography of Chhunga Chanchin, former chief minister of Mizoram was published in 1999 titled Ch. Chhunga Chanchin. The book was authored by James Dokhuma and published by Gilzom Offset Press in Aizawl .
