C. Ramchandra Biography

C. Ramchandra was a popular music director of Bollywood during 1950’s and 1960’s. He has used the names ‘Annasaheb’ and ‘Ram Chitalkar’ for a few movies. In the name Chitkar, he has sung the popular song Shola jo bhadke of Albela and Kitna haseen hai mausam in Azad. He has sung and acted in a few Marathi movies with the name R. N. Chitalkar. As C. Rama Chandra, his most popular works include – Anarkali, Aasha and Albela. He has used western rock band and western singing style for the compositions of Aasha and Albela, at a time when such experiments were not common in Indian film music. He included alto sax in his tunes and used along with tabla, guitar and harmonium. The most popular patriotic song ‘E mere watan ke logo’ penned by Pradeep and sung by Lata Mangeshkar was composed by C.Ramachandra. This particular song brought tears to late prime minister of India, Pandit. Jawaharlal Nehru. As a producer, he has produced a few movies with "New Sai Productions".

 

Ramachandra was born on January 12, 1918 in Puntamba, Ahmednagar. He studied music at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. He took formal training in classical music under Shankar Rao Sapre and Vinayakbua Patwardhan. After joining film industry, he used saxophone along with Indian traditional musical instruments to compose music. His association with director Shantha Ram has also given hit movies like Navrang and Stree. Navrang is remembered most for its Holi song, ‘Are jare’ and ‘Aada hai chandama raat aadi’. Perhaps the classic movie ‘Anarkali’ is one among the best composition of C. Ramachandra. The romantic song ‘Yeh zindagi uski ki hai’ sung by Lata mangeshkar was quite popular those days.

 

He has also done a jugalbadi classical song for a Tamil movie - Vanjikottai Valiban that was very popular those days. This rare song was pictured on trained classical dancers of Indian screen, Vaijayanthimala and Padmini. His other popular songs belong to the movies – Rajthilak, Lehrein, Parchhaain, Nadiya ke paar, Bahu Rani, Nirala, Amardeep, Patanga, Khidki, Jitne Door Utne Paas, Naghma-e-Sehra, Leela, Ghunguroo, Zabaan, Jhangar, Shin Shinaki Bubala Boo, Azad, Yasmin and Duniya Gol Hai.
