Bhagirathi Devi Biography

Bhagirathi Devi is an Indian politician and social worker from Bihar. She currently serves as the member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly representing Ramnagar of Paschim Champaran. It’s her fourth term as MLA. Devi was a sweeper in the 1980s in the block development office in Narkatiyaganj, West Champaran district with a salary of rupees 800 per month. But seeing her social activities, many political parties approached her and she joined Bharatiya Janata Party. Currently she is one of the most reputed female politicians from Bihar. She is not educated, mostly speaks in her native language Bhojpuri, but her sincerity for working towards women empowerment and education is worth appreciation. For her overall contributions towards the field of public affairs, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2019.

Bhagirathi Devi was born on 12 January 1954 in Narkatiaganj, West Champaran district, Bihar. She hails from a Mahadalit family with poor economic conditions. She was married to a railway employee. Nearly three decades ago, she worked as a sweeper in a Bihar government office. An ordinary woman with some extra ordinary traits, she started addressing issues whenever women visit the office. When it comes to woman problems, she never hesitated to give a helping hand.

Very soon her family realized that she is not an ordinary woman and that her talents should be utilized in a better way. By mid-1990s, Political parties also started approaching her, to join their parties. She had already given her job to do something really worth. Before quitting the job she had to face a lot of hardships to bring up children. Currently a champion of woman rights, she has allowed Anganawadi Kendra to open its office at her residence in Champaran.
