Asha Bhosle Biography

Asha Bhosle is an Indian playback singer. She started her career in singing in 1943 and is in the industry for more than six decades. She has sung for over 1000 Hindi movies and recorded a number of private albums. She is the sister of famous playback singer Lata Mangeshkar. She is good in film music, pop, gazals, bhajans and qawwalis, etc. She has sung in a number of Indian languages. She has sung more than 12,000 songs and recognized as the Most Recorded Artist in the world in September 2009.

She was born on 8th September 1933 in Sangli, Bombay Presidency. Her father died when she was nine and her family moved to Mumbai. Her first song was Chala Chala Nav Bala for the Marathi movie Majha Bal in 1943. Her Hindi debut song was Saawan Aaya for the film Chunariya.

She eloped with 31 year old Ganpatrao Bhosle at her age of 16 and married him. But as she was ill-treated by her in-laws and husband, she came back to her maternal home with two children and carrying her third child in her womb. She dedicated her life to singing after that. She partnered with many music directors like O. P. Nayyar, Khayyam, Ravi, Sachin Dev Burman, Rahul Dev Burman, Ilayaraja, A. R. Rahman, Jaidev, Shankar – Jaikishan, Anu Malik, and many others. She sang for the Tamil film Chandramukhi when she was 72 years old in 2005. Some popular Tamil songs she sang are Oh! Butterfly, September Maadham, and Vennila.

She sung in ghazals like Dil cheez kya hai, In aankhon ki masti ke, Ye kya jagah hai doston and Justju jiski thi. She sung the songs Tanha Tanha and Rangeela Re for the film Rangeela in 1995. Some of her Hindi songs are Aaja Aaja, Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, O Haseena Zulfon Wali, Yeh Mera Dil, etc.

She is an excellent cook and is running restaurants in Dubai and Kuwait. Her relationship with her sister Lata broke off for sometime due to her elopement with her lover. They have also worked together in some albums. Asha Bhosle won Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards for seven times and National Film Awards twice. The Government of India honored her with Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
