Arnab Chakrabarty Biography

Arnab Chakrabarty is a young Sarod player from Mumbai. He is also a Hindustani classical musician who is currently based in Mumbai and UK. Arnab's early training followed the Maihar and Shahjahanpur schools, and later got drawn towards Etawah Gharana. He also received training in Shahjahanpur Gharana from well-known Kalyan Mukherjea till his guru’s death in 2010. Known to be a well capable sarod player in terms of technique, Arnab Chakrabarty also plays rapid-fire melodic phrases.

 

Arnab Chakrabarty was born in Mumbai on 19 September 1980. He grew up in Mumbai, where his father worked as a Chemistry professor in IIT. He is of Bengali origin. He grew up in Mumbai, where he received training in Hindustani music and sarod under various gurus in different schools of music. His formal training started with Sarod exponent Brij Narayan, and he continued his training under Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta of the Shahjahanpur Gharana. The schools in which he trained - Maihar and Shahjahanpur are branches of Tansen’s Senia idiom.

 

On a musical scholarship given by Ford Foundation, he completed a dual degree in ethnomusicology and international relations from Hampshire College in 2002, which gave him exposure to different traditions of music. He also experimented with new ideas. He made his solo debut in 1994, and since then fully associated with the field of ‘string’ music. He has also won many music competitions since then, as a performing artist. In 1999 he got opportunity to perform before Dr Kofi Annan, then the United Nations Secretary General. He has also displayed his talents in several music festivals across the country.
