Amrinder Singh Biography

Captain Amarinder Singh was born on March 11, 1942 in Patiala in the royal family of Maharaja Yadavindra Singh of Phulkian Jat dynasty and Maharani Mohinder Kaur. He was married to Preneet Kaur in 1964. His elder sister Heminder Kaur is married to Kunwar Natwar Singh, the Former External Affairs Minister. He is brother in law of Shiromani Akali Dal leader the former IPS Officer, Sardar Simranjit Singh Mann as wife of Capt. Amarinder Singh Maharani Preneet Kaur is real sister of Mann's wife. Incidentally, Rajmata Preneet Kaur is a former MP of congress who has served as Minister of State in the cabinet of Manmohan Singh in External Affairs Ministry from 2009 to 2014. 

Captain Amrinder Singh attended the Welham Boys' School and Lawrence School Sanawar and The Doon School Dehradun. Captain Amrinder Singh joined Army in June 1963 after graduating from the National Defense Academy and Indian Military Academy but resigned soon after in early 1965. Later Captain Amrinder Singh joined Army again the same year during war with Pakistan and served as a Captain.

Captain Amrinder Singh joined Congress at the initiative of Rajiv Gandhi his friend in Doon school and won the Lok Sabha election in 1980. Captain Amrinder Singh resigned from Parliament and also from Congress in protest of Operation Blue Star and joined Shiromani Akali Dal. He was elected to the Punjab state legislative assembly from Talwandi Sabo and was made minister of Panchayat Development, agriculture and Forest departments. However, he formed his own party and meged it with congress party. He was given the charge of congress party as its President of State unit. He also served as Chief Minister of Punjab from 2002 to 2007. Currently he is sitting MP of Lok Sabha.
