Aminuddin Dagar Biography

Aminuddin Dagar was a Hindustani vocalist who was specialized in dagar-vani style of Dhrupad singing. He is also remembered as the younger brother in the legendary jugalbandi or duo of Senior Dagar Brothers. He along with his elder brother Ustad Nasir Moinuddin Dagar played a significant role in keeping the Dhrupad tradition alive after the death of their father Ustad Nasiruddin Khan Dagar. It took 10 complete years for Ustad Nasiruddin Khan Dagar to teach his children. After the sad demise of their father, Dagar brothers continued learning from Ustad Riyazuddin Khan and Ustad Ziauddin Khan Dagar. Padma Bhushan award in 1986, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1985, Swami Haridas Award in 1979 and D.Litt. from Rabindra Bharati University in 1991 are the major honours received by Dagar.

 

He was the young of two brothers, born in the year 1923 in Indore. He gave his first performance at the age of eleven. During 1940s music world witnessed the meteoric rise of Moinuddin and Aminuddin as the Senior Dagar Brothers. They gave new dimensions to jugalbandi singing. Earlier Jugalbandi was regarded as a competition between two while Dagar brothers gave a new type of performance music world has never witnessed. They believed in the concept of a harmonious synchronization between the two singers. The two brothers visited Russia and Japan also, Le Monde of Paris dated 17 November 1964 is regarded as one among their best performances overseas.

 

Ustad Nasir Moinuddin Dagar died soon after a concert in 1966. Young Dagar came to Kolkata as the founder principal of Birla Academy Swar Sangam. In 1975 he founded his own Dhrupad institute and named after his elder brother Ustad Nasir Moinuddin Dagar Dhrupad Sangeet Ashram. It was based on gurukal system of teaching. It is now the oldest surviving institute solely dedicated to the preservation and propagation of dagar-vani Dhrupad. He died in the year 2000.
