Ambi Subramaniam Biography

Ambi Subramaniam is a young Indian/American violinist, pianist and singer born in the year 1991. He is the youngest son of renowned violinist, composer and conductor, Dr. L. Subramaniam and Vijayashree Subramaniam, a singer. Renowned playback singer of Bollywood, Kavita Krishnamurthy is his stepmother. His sister Bindu Subramaniam is also a noted singer and musician. His elder brother Dr. Narayana Subramaniam is a poet and ghazal singer. Both his grandparents, V. Lakshminarayana, and Seethalakshmi were accomplished musicians. V. Lakshminarayana was a renowned violinist while Seethalakshmi, a veena player. Well-known violinist-composers L. Shankar and L. Vaidyanathan are his uncles.

 

Ambi was born on 5 August 1991 in Los Angeles, CA. After the death of his mother in 1995, his family relocated to Bangalore. In 1999, his father married Kavita Krishnamurthy. His first two collaboration albums - Violin Maestros (2007) and Live at Neues Gewandhaus, Leipzig (2009) won GiMA awards. He was guided to the world of music by his father at the age of 3, who is his guru and true inspiration too. Ambi plays a 5-string acoustic/electric violin and a 4-string acoustic violin and he endorses D’Addario strings. He has also studied western classical violin, piano and Carnatic singing. He completed his MBA at RIMS, Bangalore.

 

Ambi gave his first vocal concert at the age of 6. His first violin concert happened in the New Year's Eve of 1999, at the age of 7, in Hyderabad. In 2004, he started performing with his father L. Subramaniam and now also, continues the practice. Ambi gave his debut orchestral performance at the age of 15. He is a regular performer at the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival. He has won Philomena Thumbochetty Awards – All India High Achiever ABRSM violin grade three times. He was awarded golden violin by HH Sri Jayendra Saraswati.
