Akbaruddin Owaisi Biography

Akbaruddin Owaisi is a prominent politician belonging to a religio-political party - All India Majlis-e Ittihad al-Muslimin. He is the youngest son of prominent political figure and former president of the party - Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi of Owaisi family and the younger brother of parliamentarian Asaduddin Owaisi. MIM was first founded in 1927 by a group of Islamists of Hyderabad as a socio-religious organisation and later it changed to a religio-political outfit by Nawab Bahadur Yar Jung and Qasim Rizvi. Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi stepped into politics after his father was jailed. Both the siblings - Akbaruddin Owaisi and Asaduddin Owaisi stepped into politics following father’s footsteps. Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi has set up many educational institutions and hospitals and Akbaruddin is the managing director of Owaisi hospital, set up by his father.

Owaisi was born in Hyderabad on 14 June 1970. His schooling was completed in Hyderabad and later he joined MBBS at Gulbarga. But after two years he quit the studies to active involve in politics during early 1990s. He married a Christian woman in 1995 and though she converted to Islam, they had to face opposition from father. They reconciled three years later. With the mid 1990s he rose as a prominent young leader of MIM. He got elected to state assembly for the first time in 1999 from Chandrayangutta constituency and repeated his success for the next three terms - 2004, 2009 and 2014.

Owaisi survived a murder attempt in 2011 following a property dispute. He was stabbed and was in critical stage though his life got saved. Most recently on May 18, 2014, a plot to kill him was busted by Bangalore police.
