Ahmed Rushdi Biography

Ahmed Rushdi was a versatile and immensely popular Pakistani playback singer of Indian origin. His name is included among the top voices of golden era of Pakistani film music. He was born in Hyderabad Deccan, India in year 1934. After independence he migrated to Pakistan and became a leading singer in the Pakistan film industry. He holds the record of highest number of recorded songs in Pakistani cinema. He has also recorded songs in Urdu, English, Punjabi, Bengali, Sindhi and Gujarati languages. He died at a comparatively young age of 48 in Karachi, in year 1983. In 2003, Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf awarded him the Sitara-e-Imtiaz honour.

 

Ahmed Rushdi was born in Hyderabad Deccan on 24 April 1934. His father, Syed Manzoor Mohammad was a college lecturer who taught different languages. Since childhood Ahmed got drawn towards music, and used to listen songs in AIR. He neither inherited music from any one, and none of his family members were associated with music. His music talent was first spotted by one of the friends of his father. He enrolled in a local music academy in Hyderabad Deccan, where he got basic knowledge in music. However Rushdi did not get any sort of formal training of classical music. Yet he had an effective command over high and low notes.

 

His family moved to Pakistan and settled in Karachi in 1954. While at Pakistan he started participating in musical shows. His first song was recorded for an Indian film, Ibrat in 1951 just before he migrated to Pakistan. He recorded "Bunder Road se Keemari" – a non-filmy song in 1954. The song got noticed, and gave him early break to films. He recorded hit songs for Bara Admi (1956), Wah Rey Zamaney (1957), Raat Ke Rahi (1957), Yeh Dunya (1958) etc during his early phase in Pakistani cinema. He received his first Nigar Award as Best Male Playback Singer for the song, "Chand Sa Mukhra Gora Badan". Ahmed Rushdi was a heart patient, and died of heart attack in 1983.
