Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Biography

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is an Indian politician and parliamentarian from the state of West Bengal. He is affiliated to Indian National Congress. He currently serves as a parliamentarian in the 17th Lok Sabha headed by Narendra Modi and represents constituency. Under Manmohan Singh’s government, he has served as Minister of State for Railways, in office during 28 October 2012 – 16 May 2014. He successfully contested the 1999 Indian general election too. He is also a former president of West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee, who took power on 10 February 2014. A 5-time Congress MP from West Bengal, he is currently the Congress leader in Lok Sabha.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was born on 2 April 1956 to Niranjan and Saroja Bala Chowdhury. He was born at Berhampore in Murshidabad district, West Bengal. He completed his education from his hometown, Berhampore. Chowdhury joined the Indian National Congress party in the 1980s, during the premiership of Rajiv Gandhi. In 1991 he contested state assembly elections for the first time from Nabagram constituency and lost to Communist Party of India (Marxist) by a narrow margin of 1401 votes. He was held hostage by the supporters of CPI (M) candidate during the polling. In 1996, he was elected from the same constituency with a margin of approximately 20,329 votes.

He contested his Lok Sabha seat for the first time in 1999 general elections and won from Berhampore constituency. He was made Congress president for the Murshidabad district following the victory. Since then he has represented the same constituency in parliament for 5 times in a row, and is currently one of the prominent and influential leaders of Congress party from the state of Bengal.
