A. K. Sukumaran Biography

A.K. Sukumaran was a famous playback singer and music composer of Malayalam cinema in the golden era. He was one of the famous names in playback singing in the early talkies. He passed away on 17th May 2018 aged 80. He is best known for the duet song, Mani Mukile of Kadathukaran aside Janaki in the year 1965. The song gave him instant success. Though he has done only 6 songs belonging to 4 movies, he was quite regular with stage shows, and one of the most sought performers on stage then.

 

He was born in Thalaapp of Kannur district in 1938. He sang for Kozhikode Akaswani for the first time in 1954. In 1956 he became HMV artist. In those days, he had huge admirers of songs recorded by HMV. Sukumaran did playback singing for a few movies in the 1960s and was active in stage shows. More than film songs, he gained popularity through light music and non-filmy songs. He has recorded 22 songs with HMV and released as cassette during his glorious singing years. He has also rendered his voice for both amateur and professional plays, which include Thoppil Bhasi’s Mooladhanam in 1958. Once he was the shining star in singing concerts and known for his charismatic performance and presence.

 

In Kerala and outside, he has performed live in more than 1000 stage shows. He passed away on 17th May 2018 in the evening at Ragasudha, his residence at Pathiyakarakara aged 80. He was away from limelight for past few decades and has been suffering from age related ailments for a long time. He is survived by his wife Sudha Baby.
