A. K. Gopalan Biography

Ayillyath Kuttiari Gopalan, popularly known as A. K. G or A. K. Gopalan was one of the prominent communist leaders from Kerala. He was the first leader of opposition in India. He was born on 1 October 1904 in Peralasseri, Kannur District he become one of the most powerful communist leaders from Kerala. He has been an active member of Indian National Congress too before Indian independence and has actively participated in freedom struggle movement and Salt Satyagraha. AKG was married to Susheela Gopalan, who was a prominent Marxist and trade union activist. P. Karunakaran, the Member of Parliament for the Kasargode constituency is his son-in-law.

 

A. K. Gopalan was born in Kannur. His education was completed at Tellichery and started his career as a teacher. During this time he actively participated in India’s freedom struggle movement. Gopalan took part in the Khilafat Movement, later transforming himself to a complete social worker. In 1927 he joined the Indian National Congress and participated in Khadi Movement and strived his best for the uplift of Harijans (low caste people). He was arrested for participating in the salt Satyagraha in 1930. It was during his period in jail which he came close to communist ideas. He became a permanent member of the Congress Socialist Party which later restructured as Communist Party of India in 1939. He led the hunger march from Malabar region to Chennai in 1937.

 

In 1939, with the outbreak of Second World War, he was arrested by British government activism against British domination. But he escaped in 1942. But was caught again shortly after the end of World War in 1945. When India celebrated Independence, he was behind bars and released a few weeks later. Later he became active in politics and has been elected to Lok Sabha for 5 consecutive terms till his death on March 22, 1977 and became the first leader of opposition in the parliament of India.
