Janaki, who is also known as ‘Nightingale of south’ has rendered her beautiful voice to numerous songs of Malayalam. Though she has been here since 60’s, her best songs belong to 70’s and 80’s. Till Chitra emerged as the new voice during middle 80’s, she was the top voice of Malayalam. It’s not at all easy to list 10 best songs of this nightingale and rank it according to number. She has won 11 Kerala state awards too. At many times, as it was not possible to point out a particular song, she was awarded for multiple songs the same year. This happened during early 1980’s when she was glowing as the brightest star of Malayalam music. So, let me present a few songs that I feel simply the best.

Unarunaroo Unnipoove: This melodious number belongs to the movie ‘Ammaye Kaanan’ and this song was pictured on old actress Ambika rowing a boat in the backwaters of Kerala.

Aa nimishathinte nirvrithiyil: This song presented her a state award too. It belongs to the movie Chandrakantham (1974), pictured on Naseer and Sharada.

Ennitum nee enne arinjillallo: This song is still the heart beats of many lost lovers and love stories. This song belongs to Naseema (1982).

Mauname nirayum mauname: This song belongs to award winning movie Thakara of 1979 and still considered as one among the best 3 songs sung by Janaki.

Mainakam karayil ninnuyarunnuvo: This song belongs to Mammooty movie ‘Thrishna’. Though the movie was not a hit, this song is still adored by millions of Janaki fans.

Suryakanthi suryakanthi: This song solely belongs to Janaki. The movie ‘Kaattu thulasi’ was a big hit of 1965 with Sharada and Sathyan as leading stars.

Naadha nee varum kalocha: This song pictured on Zareena Wahab from the movie ‘Chamaran’ in 1980, gave her a state award too.

Nirangal than nritham: Zareena Wahab was given Janaki’s voice always, particularly doing late 70’s and early 80’s and all those songs are golden melodies of Malayalam. This song from movie ‘Parasparam’ is one such.

Raavil raga nilavil: Heroine - Poornima Jayaram, movie – Mazha Nilavu and year 1983. It’s another great song sung by Janaki for Malayalis.

Rakendu kiranangal: This song is a direct copy of ‘Palbar ke liye’ of Swami sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Yet Janaki through her voice,made this song of Avalude Raavukal Malayalis’ own property.

Now also the list is incomplete. So let me briefly mention a few more: Mizhiyoram of Manjil virinja pookkal, Sandhye of Madanolsavam, Aayiram varnangal of Pullimaan, Swarnamukile swarnamukile of Ithu jnangalude katha, Gopike nin viral of Kaattathe kilikoodu, kasthuri maan of Kaana marayathu, Thushaara bindukkale of Aalinganam and Ambala velayil of Stree.
