T.M. Soundararajan - A Singer Associated With My Childhood Memories

Yesterday morning, in the front pages of newspapers when I read about the sad demise of Soundararajan, I became quiet for a moment. Many of my childhood memories flashed through my mind and I need to say that my childhood days are incomplete without mentioning Soundararajan’s voice. My father still now, is a great fan of old Tamil songs, particularly Sivaji Ganeshan’s songs and Sivaji’s voice is of course, Soundararajan. Same is the case of M.G.R songs too and my father is a great fan of both these actors. When he phoned me yesterday for some other reason, I couldn’t stop asking him about this musical legend and his contributions to Tamil industry. Let me add one more thing. Whenever movies of both these actors show in our nearby theatre, my father never misses the chance and take our family to show the movie. As my mother is a Tamilian she is interested in old Tamil movies and we kids don’t have any option too. So, through this column I would like to give my homage to the greatest playback singer of Tamil screen, the state has ever witnessed. I just want to mention a few hit songs of this musical legend.

Undoubtedly more than 90% of songs sync lipped by Sivaji Ganeshan and MGR belong to none other than Soundararajan. But it is to be noted that, if we listen carefully it’s possible to know on whom that song is pictured on. That was the magical touch of Soundararajan. He used entirely two different singing styles for these leading heroes of Tollywood that time. When he sang for ‘Atho antha paravai’ for MGR for Aayirathiloruvan or ‘Aaru maname aaru’ for Sivaji Ganeshan for Aandavan kattalai it was easy to distinguish these two singing styles quickly.

Now let me mention a few hits of Soundararajan than I have heard most. Among the songs of MGR, ‘Melle po mello po’ was one fine composition I used to hear repeatedly during childhood. Among Sivaji’s numbers, songs of Vasantha Maligai like ‘Yaarukkake’ are so special to me. Let me mention a few more hits of my choice – Paalum pazhavum title track and Naan pesa ninappathellam, Anbe vaa title track, Naan aanayittal of Enga veetu pillai, Ampathilum aasa varum of Rishi moolam, Naale namathu title track and Acham enpathuneed special mention. I have mentioned only a few songs that come to my memory first. Truth is that, it’s not at all possible to list the contributions given by this great singer of Indian cinema, who has already become a part of Indian history. As long as Indian playback singing remains a topic in discussion, Soundararajan’s name will of course be mentioned in the top list. It’s my earnest tribute to the singer who has reformed Tamil music in his own distinct style and voice modulation.
