This Is The Week To Celebrate Pulmonary Rehabilitation

March 11-17 is observed as National Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week. Every individual out there, who is suffering from COPD can get themselves into pulmonary rehabilitation programs as these programs are efficiently working in improving the lives of the people who are living up with COPD by various methods such as exercise, education for better management of their breathing, nutrition counseling, education on lung hygiene, healthy living, smoking cessation, etc. These life strengthening programs helps and encourage patients to live a better and healthy life despite of chronic lung disease.

 

These programs are helpful as they help affected people to return back to an active and healthy lifestyle.

 

Now let’s talk about the people who need this pulmonary rehabilitation programs:

The main aim of the programme is to avert and restrict the physiological and psychological effects of pulmonary illness and implement various methods which are helpful in improving the overall cardio-pulmonary health and status. This is accomplished by developing individualized programmes of exercise, education and modification in lifestyle that are well fitted according to an individual’s needs and abilities.

 

Mainly there are three steps which are followed under this rehabilitation programs:

Phase 1 (Initial)

This programme starts at the time of hospitalization of the patient. The aim of this phase is to initiate an early assortment to reduce the effect of de-conditioning. This phase consists of oxygen therapy, chest wall manipulation, nebulisation, postural drainage, breathing exercises and incentive spirometry to enhance oxygenation. The aerobic training of this phase is usually conducted with electrocardiographic monitoring.  

 

Phase 2 (Conditioning Phase)

The second phase of the programme is used to modify the aggravating factors for lung diseases along with long and bearable training. The conditioning phase consists of chest care, aerobic exercise, stress management, smoking cessation, and modification in behavior, nutritional advice along with patient and their family education. Once the early symptoms get stabilized the second phase can begin. It is conducted in the form of group sessions or classes and one session normally lasts for 60-90 minutes. Frequency is nearly about -5 times a week to complete a total of 20 sessions. All the sessions are monitored by trained staff of physicians.

 

Phase 3 (Maintenance Phase)

The main aim of this phase is to continue the benefits gained by the patients during the second phase of therapy. The maintenance phase is the continuation of the aerobic exercise programme but with lesser frequency such as 3 times a week at home/ in gym/ or at hospital.
