Vidya Balan is now considered as the most successful actress of Indian cinema. Through the powerful performances she has given through a series of women oriented movies – Paa, Ishqiya, No one killed Jessica, Dirty Picture and Kahani, she has placed herself among the most talented actresses Bollywood has ever produced. Through the roles she made everyone feel jealous of her and told the whole world that fashion and glamour are not the essential factors to become successful in Bollywood.

Like any actor she also has gone through bad phase of her career when she sat at home waiting for a dream role to happen in her life. Her first movie was also shelved by then. She is one among those actresses who had late entry in Bollywood. Yet luck favoured her in many means. She had a dream start in Bollywood in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Parineeta opposite Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt. Her role was well appreciated and movie was a big success too. Very often, people misinterpreted that she is a Bengali girl, as she did the role of a Bengali traditional girl in the movie. But debut movie was also Bengali – Bhalo Theko. Parineeta won her best actress debut award and she was nominated for best actress as well, in Filmfare.

Next year only one movie was released – blockbuster Lage raho Munna Bhai, where she did the role of a radio jockey. Her role was well appreciated and her performance was well noted. Thus began the success journey of Vidya Balan. But later she faced many obstacles in her path. Though she did meaty roles in Heyy Baby, Guru and Bhool Bhulayya, she was criticized for her less awareness on costumes and fashion sense. Perhaps in Bollywood, Vidya Balan is the only actress who has been targeted continuously for less ‘fashion quotient’ IQ. She was most criticized for Heyy Baby and Kismet Connection and a few public parties too.

Even after getting so many bad words about her accessories, strange costumes and make up, she shut up all critics’ mouth with the roles she chose later. When she became aware that modern costumes don’t suit her much, she opted traditional costumes and accessories. She became success too. Dirty Picture, Paa, Ishqiya, No one killed Jessica and Kahani are the best instances for her reformation as a style icon of modern times!
