The Road Less Taken

That day is not far when our government will open IIT’s, NIT’s and IIM’s in the every nook and corner of the cities in India and also might customize the syllabus of the primary education on the lines of technical education just to indicate the ‘so called’ importance of technical education in the country.

In country like India, the humanities are an extremely neglected stream. The words like Arts & Humanities welcome frowns and disinterest from our families & friends. But it seems now that this negligence has almost crossed the societal boundaries and has reached our HRD ministry, who recently announced to increase the number of IITs; IIM’s hence showing their vested interest in just doubling the GDP of the country and ignoring those education bodies which can imbibe social understanding in the society. In this race of minting techies, our government and society has totally snubbed those institutes which nurture the intellect with wisdom.

The underlying downside lies within the incontrovertible fact that in India 'Science' and 'Commerce' streams are accorded superior standing. The Humanities are still treated as inferior counter - components. If one compares the budget allocation on premier institutes like IIT’s, IIM’s and JNU, picture would be very clear that how our government itself is overlooking the other institutions.

In recent past, there was increase in budget for IIT’s to 1 billion USD per year. Which was never ever granted to the famous humanities institutes, this government’s strong stress on promoting Science and technology is admirable at one level however it's totally unsatisfying also, as India has as a country has a potential wherever the Humanities have full scope to grow given due to variety of culture, of languages, a dense ethnic and cultural background and history. We have enough background to provide to supply the knowledge to our students and other foreign students also, but thanks to the policies on the part of the Education Department to market them.

Social science departments can benefit a student to the importance of skills like communication; political economy helps to grasp the finer details of the economic process which can help Techies and management students to excel in their respective process in a better way.

Although institutions like the Jawaharlal Nehru University or the Jamia Millia Islamia are admired and respected, still aches from lack of attention and funding from government and are woefully inadequate in imparting quality & timely education, due to the faculty positions  which remain unfilled for years, due to lack of effort on the part of the administration in finding suitable candidates. These problems need to be addressed if we want our social sciences universities to be as widely recognized as our IITs and IIMs.

The social sciences and humanities cultivate a broader world view. This varied world view is necessary for everybody who aspires to be successful. Because the best entrepreneurs and most prosperous professionals are those who look beyond their preferred fields and take eccentric decisions.
