Self Defense - To Protect The Women Of Our Society

A recent article in a newspaper reported that “West Bengal has the dubious distinction of recording the largest number of crimes against women. And it isn't a recent phenomenon. According to the National Crime Research Bureau (NCRB), the state has topped the charts for eight successive years, busting the myth that Bengal is a progressive state that respects women. Women aged 15-44 years are more at risk from rape and domestic violence than from cancer, car accidents, war and malaria, according to World Bank data. Self-protection is, at best, one part of a comprehensive solution to this violence and so, the Globsyn’s Young Indians Net in collaboration with West Bengal Nanbudo Association has taken an initiative to promote it so that they can save as many women from violence as they can. Continuing in its mission to promote self-defense amongst women, GBS Yi-Net organized a Self-Defense Workshop for three hundred students of CMO Girls High School so that they never have to experience the terror and helplessness. The students were from classes VIII to Classes XII.

The workshop was conducted by five trainers headed by Sensei Anil Kumar Ram. The students were trained in three shifts; on average 100 students were trained in each shift. The event started with the girls getting briefed about certain self-defense techniques. We could not impact a huge number with this event, but what is more important was the joy in their eyes, the joy of learning the ways to protect themselves. One important thing to learn about the art of self-defense is how to inflict pain on the attacker and escape, and not necessarily beat them up. One does not need to be an expert in martial arts to succeed in escaping the attacker. A woman’s responsibility is to ensure her safety and protection wherever she is. Gone are the days when women were helpless and uneducated. With proper knowledge, determination, confidence and alertness, women are empowered and can surpass any obstacle or untoward accidents that come along the way.

May teaching 300 girls is a very small number, but for the Young Indians it is a big step towards what they want to achieve. Passion to serve the nation, to make it safer and to make it stronger will continue. For Young Indians the journey will never stop, it is a non-stop endeavor to serve others selflessly.
