Rafi's Voice Suits Best For Shammi Kapoor

‘Mera Awaaz Kho Gaya’ – These sincere words were told by none other than Shammi Kapoor when Rafi passed away so much unexpectedly. Shammi Kapoor and Mohammed Rafi – two integral parts of Bollywood cinema in the 1960s; both compliments one another. Both have played a significant role in the career buildup of the other person. ‘Chahe mujhe koi jungle kahe’, ‘Oh hassena’, ‘Akele akele kahan jaa rahe ho’, ‘Deewana hua badal’, ‘Dil ki jaroke mein tujhko’, ‘Tumse achcha kaun hai’ – how many memorable and evergreen songs of different shades have born in this amazing combination! Discussion of Bollywood songs is incomplete without the special mention of this amazing pair. That’s the magic created by Shammi Kapoor-Mohammed Rafi duo in the 1960s and the most deadly combination as well.

Though many songs of this amazing combination were born in the 1950s like Baar baar dekho of Dil dekhe dekho and title track of Tumsa nahin dekha, it was ‘Yahoo’ song of Junglee released in 1960 which gave a freshness and new touch to Bollywood music, which was never experimented and heard earlier. The song not only cemented Rafi’s position in Bollywood, it also gave the first dancing star to Bollywood. All the songs were sung by Rafi – both slow beat and soft number like Ehsaan tera hoga mujhpar and fast beats like Aiyyayya Sukoo Sukoo. The movie was a huge musical hit and since then, Rafi became the ghost voice of Shammi Kapoor and has played a significant role in establishing Kapoor as the first dancing star of Bollywood.

All the music directors including Shankar-Jaikishen, S. D. Burman, Ravi, R. D. Burman and O. P. Nayyar have experimented this combination. Yet among all the best songs were born in Shankar-Jaikishen combination. Junglee, Rajkumar, Brahmachari, Dil Tera Diwana, Professor, Budtameez, Prince, Janwar and An evening in Paris are only a few among those instances. Interestingly the trademark film titles of Shammi Kapoor like Junglee, Janwar, Badtameez etc exclusively belong to Shankar-Jaikishen. Rafi-Kapoor combination of 1960s can be compared to Kishore Kumar-Rajesh Khanna duo of 1970s. While SJ gave maximum memorable songs to Rafi-Shammi, youth sensation R. D. Burman created new magic with Kishore Kumar-Rajesh Khanna duo in the 1970s.
